She now lives in Mexico and I'd like to junk this thing (and she's fine with that) as it's hogging driveway space. Do I have to wait until she visits to make a trip to the DMV or can I just have it hauled off?

I live in North Carolina and the car is no longer insured if that makes a difference. Thanks! How do I junk an old car that's both in my name and someone elses (who lives in Mexico and is fine with that)?
you simply call a vehicle salvage company to pick up car........you'll need keys, title or registration or just proof of ownership[you r credentials alone is sufficient; they'll still take the car].....possibly, if you don't have all car documents, a copy of your driver's license should satisfy the laws they must abide by in your state

and..........you may even receive $50-$100 or more... or tax credit if you donate the carHow do I junk an old car that's both in my name and someone elses (who lives in Mexico and is fine with that)?
Look at the title. Are your two name with "AND" or are they with "OR"?

And-means you need two signatures to make a change to the title.

OR-means only one of you needs to sign.

Sometimes "AND" can be designated by "/"

Then when you sign off on the title, phone the car hauler and give them the title. Funny thing I was nowhere near North Carolina 2 years ago, in fact I was working on an over-seas contract in the Persian Gulf. The California DMV claims that they recieved this info from the N.C. DMV and the only way they can clear it is if they recieve another letter from N.C. stating the opposite. The N.C. DMV are denying they sent any such info and are saying that my traffic record is clean and that there are no violations or convictions showing on my record. Meanwhile I continue to suffer from the black points I earned because of this, as well as the increase in my car insurance premium and the possibility of an arrest warrant issued in my name if this is not duely cleared. any advice??How do I get the DMV from one state to send a clearance letter for me to the DMV of another state?
Go on the NC DMV's website and follow the instructions for getting a driver abstract.north carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-2668008065049372052012-01-19T04:39:00.003-08:002012-01-19T04:39:52.359-08:00How do you go through buying a car off of Craigslist?Just wanted to know the step by step procedure to buying a USED car off of Craigslist. The important parts to me are getting the car fully inspected for any faults (where to get one done in Wilmington, North Carolina), the paperwork involved with the DMV. If there is or isn't tax that is charged while transferring vehicles. I know this is a very detail intensive question, but if anyone can just link me to a general way of buying a used car through a private party, particularly over Craigslist, that would be great! Thank you for all your help! How do you go through buying a car off of Craigslist?
I personally always check for these when I ask the seller about the car:

1. Mileage

2. Engine problems

3. Transmission Problems

4. Clean title

Of course they can twist the truth a bit which make it vital to always take a look at the car in person and perhaps bring someone with you if you think you are not well versed enough about cars. Trust me, it is easy to get scammed :S

How do you go through buying a car off of Craigslist?
I have bought and sold several cars there. I am in San Francisco Bay Area and I can talk from my experience in this area.

I basically start looking for cars being sold "by owner", so you can check that option at the top of the page. If the car gives that "connfidence feeling", that is, the car has the records, is being sold by the original owner, looks clean at the pictures.....based in the description, you can feel the car is from a trusworthy source.

Next step is to negociate the price. I always use The Kelly Blue Book "Trade in value"....that's the real price of cars. People normally ask for a high price, so the idea is trying to take down that number. This can be done at the seler location, while inspecting visually the car. You'll see the person, the neighborhood and in general you will confirm that feeling of trust.

If both parties agree in a that price that you have in mind, you cn take the car for further inspections. A Carfax report would be helpful.

Make sure to check the original state ofthe car. Cars comming from upper states, normaly have a lot of rust underneath. How do you go through buying a car off of Craigslist?
I never bought a car off of craigslist. Wilmington is a huge city. My sister went to uncw. I'm in Clinton. There should be alot of auto shops, mechanics to get the car checked out before you buy it. During the test drive tell the seller you want a mechanic to look it over. Since you are paying for it, the seller should not have a problem. Make sure you know if the car have a clean title not salvage. You can pay about $20 or so for a carfax (on their website).

If you are buying a car from a non dealer(private seller) they should not add any taxes or fees. If you are buying from a dealer they might add fees, tax and tags. You just have to ask.

Also check kbb.com for a look at what the price should be around.

Craigslist have alot of scammers so be careful. Call them, email and see the car. Never fall for the overseas crap.

Any other questions contact your local dmv office. They will be glad to help you out.

Good luck
Just like if you buy a car from a Classified ad in your local paper.

you arrange a time with the seller to meet.

bring a mechanic friend with you, or have the seller bring the car to your mechanic (NOT HIS/HERS).

once you find the car to be kosher, then the seller will ask for your money; you pay, then he signs over the title and registration to you. you take these papers to the DMV and pay for registering the car in your name.

Make sure you have insurance before going to the DMV.north carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-42055518484815681662012-01-19T04:39:00.002-08:002012-01-19T04:39:33.795-08:00I bought a car from a private seller, she has signed the title, should I sign it before going to DMV?I have just bought a car from a private seller. Don't worry about getting pulled over as long as you have a bill of sale in the vehicle.I bought a car from a private seller, she has signed the title, should I sign it before going to DMV?
no lol. think of anyway ppl could scam you by finding the title if they find the paper with your signature and hers on it. not sure about the laws in ur state but here you have a certain amount of days to get your car registered before you get in trouble with the law for having an unregistered vehicle. you can probably look the laws up online for your state.north carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-64307120136699721652012-01-19T04:39:00.001-08:002012-01-19T04:39:21.760-08:00Do i have to take drivers Ed in order to get my driving permit?Hello there I just turned 15 and I was wondering if I had to take drivers ed. When I went to register the vehicle, I was told by DMV that it does not comply with CA emissions regulations and cannot be registered in this state. So now what do I do? Is the seller obligated to take it back? The title and registration is still in his name, but the financing for it is now in my name. Can I return a vehicle I purchased from another state?
No, unless they had made illegal modifications or something like that, they have no obligation, you should have checked that before buying it. CA has stricter emissions standards that most other states for quite a few years now, it's not their responsibility to know that.

Just put it back on ebay I would guess is your best bet.Can I return a vehicle I purchased from another state?
No. Unless he changed something that altered the exhaust system. California is quite strict on emissions. How is the title and registration still in the previous owners name and the financing in your name? Most lenders want the title to a vehicle they finance. If you took out a personal loan, you should have the title. What I am saying is, the prevooius owner should not have it if you bought it. You are asking for trouble if this is the case. Can I return a vehicle I purchased from another state?
No, the seller is not obligated to take the vehicle back, the fact that it won't pass California emissions isn't his fault. Why don't you find out why it doesn't comply? Maybe you could fix or adjust it so it is in compliance.north carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-11675264356422620482012-01-19T04:38:00.003-08:002012-01-19T04:38:42.210-08:00I really need help with my dmv permit test cause im taking it today?can anyone tell me what do they ask you in north carolina please i wanna pass the first time i go thereI really need help with my dmv permit test cause im taking it today?
ooo im in north carolina, i didnt study or nothing and passed, it is mostly common sense questions. where in north carolina are you? im in gastonia, its near charlottenorth carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-79146093003342501722012-01-19T04:38:00.002-08:002012-01-19T04:38:29.336-08:00What should i expect when i go to get my license? This tuesday i'm going to the dmv to get my license (not permit) and i want to know what i should expect to have do on the road test? also is there a written test i will have to take or is it just the behind the wheel test? i live in north carolina. What should i expect when i go to get my license?
have you already taken a written test? if not then you will have to. be prepared to parallel park. stop completely in front of the stop sign and come to a complete stop. always check your mirrors and blind spot when changing lanes. always use turn signals. it is usually a quick test. only about 10-15 minutes. sometimes even less. just remember to stay calm dont freak out if you think youve already failed. do your best until its over. the testers know how nervous people get so they will be pretty laxxed..north carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-71255938943064461502012-01-19T04:38:00.001-08:002012-01-19T04:38:15.029-08:00Purchased a car from a private seller. My feeling is that the purpose of the left turn lane is to exit the road, not enter it. It seems that drivers using the lane incorrectly could present a danger to drivers trying to enter the lane from the other direction. I asked a former police chief about it, and he hedged a bit, saying "You're not supposed to do it..." and then indicated that police usually don't bother you about it unless you've done something else illegal as well. I've skimmed through a driver's handbook produced by the North Carolina DMV, but I couldn't find anything. So I ask you, my fellow commuters...is this legal or not? If it's illegal, is that nationwide or is it decided on a state-by-state basis? If you can provide a link or cite a specific law, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!Is it legal to use a turn lane to complete a left turn into traffic?
The legality is strictly state by state. In VA, just north of you buddy:), it is legal to use the left turn lane to merge into traffic. However, this can cause to be hazardous because many drivers don't know it's legal. Just make a habit to double check when you're planning on turning, just in case. Sorry, don't know about NC state law. If there's nothing specifically adressed, it's probably at the judgment of the officer on whether it is posing a danger to other motorists. Is it legal to use a turn lane to complete a left turn into traffic?
It has been several years since I drove in NC, but here in the Midwest, the center turn lane is for purpose of slowing down to make the turn, and to speed up for the purpose of merging with moving traffic. Personally I fully agree with this, as trying to jump straight into the traffic lane has been shown to cause more accidents. Now slowly accelerating can be irksome, while a simple swift acceleration is preferable, but not all drivers have the skill and mindset to pull this off properly. As for your last question on nationwide or state by state, each state defines and puts out the driving manual for that state, hence, there are some differences, but basically all the same. In this state here, it is illegal to make a left turn at an arrow controlled left turn light when its red, but another state close by, it is permissible to make that turn after coming to a complete stop.north carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-22627271488751123052012-01-19T04:35:00.003-08:002012-01-19T04:35:36.417-08:00Illegal U-turn. Pay the fee or go to court.?I got pulled over yesterday late at night for doing an illegal U-turn (I am not even sure when is it legal) at about 1:30 am with no one around but the cop coming behind me but by no means close. He actually did the same illegal U-turn to stop me. Of course this does not make me any less bad... but it shows it was safe to do given the conditions.

It was a U-turn in between intersections, so probably that was the bad part, but I am not sure if that was the problem.

My question is, should I pay or go to court? I am not as worried about the fine as I am about the whole point thing and my insurance rate getting screwed, this is my first offense but I have just 8 months of driving history (rates are pretty bad as they are for me now). The officer didn't bother to write the amount I am supposed to pay or who should I pay it to.

According to North Carolina DMV and magistrate sites, it looks like it is 25 dollars plus court costs (no idea how much is that) and I get 2 traffic points (the charge says G.S. 20-154).

So... Should I pay? If so how much? or try to go to court to find out how much to pay / negotiate some way to not get negative points and just pay my fine?Illegal U-turn. Pay the fee or go to court.?
Police can make a U-turn anywhere in the course of their duty if they are doing so in the effort to stop a driver who is not obeying traffic laws or there is an emergency.

Most of the time, if you go to court and say, "Yeah, I did it, and it won't happen again", then you get a lighter fine or fewer points. It's up to the discretion of the judge. It always looks better if you show up. Most traffic tickets I've seen don't have the amount of the fine on them. Just make sure you take enough cash to pay off the fine and the court costs. Since the fine is only $25 according to the DMV site, I would think it wouldn't cost any more than $100 total (and likely quite a bit less).

Only glad to help out. Good luck!
Illegal U-turn. Pay the fee or go to court.?
In most states it is legal to U-turn in an intersection. If you were between intersections then you are at fault. Go to the drivers ed place and pick up a manual or look up U-turns and see what the law is. If you were in the right then go to court and fight it. If you were wrong then just pay it.
if the fine is just $25 then pay it. It's not worth the $75-150 in court costs to fight it. With a permit you can ride from dawn to dusk and no passangers. Then instead of waiting 6 months you only have to wait 7 days then you can either take a MSF saftey course and they give you a card of completion and you can go straight to the DMV and get your edorsement. But if not you need to schedule an appointment to take your test and provide your own motorcycle.

You could most likely take it before your driving onenorth carolina dmvhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03172694588841358081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472377703573905304.post-80091338518826816302012-01-19T04:35:00.001-08:002012-01-19T04:35:19.807-08:00Can you get plates for a car, in NC, that is registered to one person, but is insured by someone else?I'm planning on buying a car, from a friend of mine, but he is waiting for a new title from the DMV.
