Can I keep an inactive North Carolina plate?

I am about to leave North Carolina. My car's NC registration will expire two months after my departure (hence the plate) and I will register the car at the other state. Can I keep the plate as a souvenir instead of mailing it back to NC DMV?|||NC is not going to come after you for the plate, however, make sure no one ever puts it on a car and tries to use it you will have a lot of questions to answer. A souvenir is no problem, using it on the road will be.
